GEO and AEO: what actually changes about how you write
Generative and answer engine optimization aren't a new toolset — they're a reason to change how content gets structured. Here's what's actually different.
GEO (generative engine optimization) and AEO (answer engine optimization) get thrown around like they need an entirely new discipline. Mostly, they don’t — they change what you’re optimizing for, not the fundamentals of good SEO.
The shift: from ranking to being quoted
Traditional SEO optimizes to be the link someone clicks. GEO and AEO optimize to be the source an AI system pulls from — and summarizes, rephrases, or quotes — without the person necessarily clicking through at all.
That changes what “winning” looks like. You can rank well and still not get cited in an AI Overview, and you can get cited without ranking #1.
What actually helps
- Direct, extractable answers. If a question has a factual answer, state it plainly near the top — don’t bury it under three paragraphs of preamble. Generative systems reward content that’s easy to lift.
- Clear entity structure. Say who, what, and how it relates to other known entities explicitly. Structured data (schema.org markup) still matters here — it’s one of the clearest signals you can give a machine.
- Original information. Rephrased conventional wisdom has nothing to offer a system that’s already synthesized that conventional wisdom from a hundred other sources. A real data point, a specific case, an unusual result — those get pulled forward.
- Genuine topical depth, not keyword density. Generative systems are better at detecting thin, keyword-stuffed content than traditional search ever was.
What doesn’t change
Technical crawlability, site speed, and a coherent site structure still matter — AI crawlers still have to reach and parse your content before any of the above applies. GEO and AEO are additive to technical SEO, not a replacement for it.
The honest version: this is still evolving, and best practices here will keep shifting for a while. Treat anything (including this post) written about GEO/AEO right now as directional, not gospel.
